What Is Structured Cabling? A Plain-English Definition

Structured cabling is a standardized system for wiring a building’s data, voice, and video connections — designed and organized around recognized industry standards, rather than wired ad hoc as needs come up over time.

The Simple Version

Instead of running a new cable haphazardly every time someone needs a connection, structured cabling builds a planned system from the start: a central wiring closet or server room, organized cable runs to every outlet and device location, and labeled connections that make the whole system easy to understand, troubleshoot, and expand.

The Core Pieces

  • Horizontal cabling — runs from a central wiring closet out to individual outlets, workstations, and devices, typically using Category 6 (Cat6) or Category 6A (Cat6A) copper cable
  • Backbone cabling — connects multiple wiring closets or floors together, often using fiber optic cable for longer distances
  • Patch panels — organized termination points in a rack where cable runs connect, making changes and troubleshooting far easier than tracing loose wires
  • Telecommunications rooms — the server room or wiring closets where everything comes together

Why It’s Called “Structured”

The term refers to the standardized, organized design — as opposed to unstructured cabling, where connections are added individually over time without an overall plan. Unstructured systems tend to become difficult to manage as a business grows, since nobody fully understands the accumulated, undocumented wiring.
