For most desks in most offices, this isn’t really a question — copper (Cat6 or Cat6A) is the standard, cost-effective choice for horizontal cabling to individual workstations, and there’s rarely a reason to do otherwise. The real decision point is the backbone: the cabling that connects floors, suites, or buildings together, and feeds your server room or main distribution point. That’s where fiber and copper genuinely compete, and where multi-tenant buildings in particular need to think carefully.
Where Copper Still Wins
Copper cabling (Cat6/Cat6A) remains the right choice for:
- Horizontal runs to individual workstations and devices. Distance limitations (copper’s effective range is roughly 100 meters) are rarely an issue at the desk level.
- Most access points, cameras, and door readers, which don’t typically need fiber’s distance or bandwidth advantages.
- Lower upfront cost, both in materials and in labor — copper termination is simpler and faster than fiber splicing, which translates into lower installation costs.
If your building or suite is contained within copper’s effective distance range and your bandwidth needs are typical for office use, there’s often no compelling reason to introduce fiber’s added cost and complexity.
Where Fiber Becomes the Right Call
Fiber optic cabling makes sense once you hit copper’s limitations:
- Distance. Connecting separate floors, wings, or buildings — common in multi-tenant commercial properties and campus-style offices — often exceeds copper’s practical distance limits, where fiber’s much longer effective range becomes necessary rather than optional.
- Bandwidth-heavy backbone connections. Even if individual desks don’t need fiber-level bandwidth, the backbone connecting an entire floor’s worth of traffic back to a central point benefits from fiber’s higher capacity, especially as cloud applications and video conferencing increase aggregate bandwidth demand.
- Electromagnetic interference. Fiber is immune to the electrical interference that can affect copper cabling, which matters in buildings with industrial equipment, elevators, or heavy electrical infrastructure nearby.
- Future-proofing. Fiber’s bandwidth ceiling is far higher than copper’s, so a fiber backbone installed today has more headroom for years of growth without needing to be replaced.
The Multi-Tenant Building Wrinkle
Multi-tenant office buildings add a layer of complexity that single-tenant offices don’t deal with:
Shared building infrastructure. In many multi-tenant buildings, a fiber backbone already exists at the building level, run by building management or a previous tenant improvement project. Before specifying new fiber, it’s worth checking what’s already in the walls — sometimes the existing infrastructure can be leveraged rather than duplicated.
Demarcation points and building rules. Building management often has specific rules about where outside contractors can terminate cabling, which riser spaces are accessible, and what permits or approvals are needed before work begins. This affects timeline and cost more than the fiber-vs-copper decision itself, but it needs to be factored in early.
Future tenant changes. If you’re a tenant (rather than the building owner) making this decision, consider what happens to the infrastructure investment if your lease ends or your suite changes — fiber backbone is a more permanent investment than per-desk copper runs.
A Practical Decision Framework
Ask these questions in order:
- Does this connection need to travel further than about 100 meters, or between floors/buildings? If yes, fiber is likely necessary, not just preferable.
- Is this a backbone connection serving many devices, or a single desk/device run? Backbones lean fiber as bandwidth needs grow; individual device runs almost always stay copper.
- Is there existing building fiber infrastructure we should leverage instead of installing new? Worth checking with building management before specifying new cabling.
- How many years do we expect to be in this space, and how much headroom do we want built in? Longer horizons and higher growth expectations favor investing in fiber’s extra capacity now rather than retrofitting later.
Most Offices End Up With Both
In practice, almost every well-designed commercial network uses a hybrid approach: a fiber backbone connecting floors, suites, or buildings back to a central point, with copper handling the “last mile” to individual desks, access points, and devices. The question usually isn’t “fiber or copper” for the whole project — it’s where the line between the two should sit for your specific building and growth plans.
